Student housing near IT University of Copenhagen.

ITU sits on the eastern edge of Amager, a flat island district that is well connected to the rest of København but still feels a step removed from the city centre. Finding a room means choosing between the student dense streets close to campus, the livelier neighbourhoods across the inner harbour, and the quieter residential pockets further south on the island.

Typical rent

550to1100

per month, single room

Most private rentals in København are quoted as cold rent, meaning utilities such as heating, water, and electricity are billed separately and can add €80 to €150 per month. A deposit of three months rent plus one month prepaid rent is standard. Student dormitory rents typically bundle utilities into one monthly figure. Always confirm whether internet is included, as it often is not in older apartment buildings.

Getting there

Getting to ITU

ITU is served by the metro M1 line, with the closest station being DR Byen, roughly a ten minute walk from the main building. From Ørestad the journey is around eight minutes. From Islands Brygge or Christianshavn students can take the M1 toward Vanløse and alight at DR Byen. Several bus routes also cross Amager and connect the surrounding neighbourhoods. The campus is fully reachable by bike from most of southern and central København in under thirty minutes.

🚲

A second hand city bike costs around €100 to €200 and is one of the fastest ways to cover the flat terrain around Amager, where dedicated cycle lanes run on most major streets.

🚇

Full time students enrolled at a Danish university can apply for a student transport card called Ungdomskort, which covers buses, metro, and regional trains at a significantly reduced monthly rate.

🌧️

København is windy and wet for much of the autumn and winter, so budget for waterproof cycling gear if you plan to bike year round, as most students do regardless of weather.

The timing

When to start looking

The Copenhagen rental market moves quickly around the main university intake months of late July and August for the autumn semester, and December for the spring semester starting in February. Starting your search at least eight to ten weeks before your intended move in date gives you a realistic chance of securing a room without taking the first option you see. Listings for September move ins begin appearing in earnest from mid June onward.

University tipITU does not operate its own student dormitories but works with third party housing providers and publishes a housing guide via the Student Hub on its website at itu.dk. The Danish student housing organisation Kollegiet also administers waiting lists for dormitory rooms in København, and early registration is strongly advised as waiting times can exceed several months.

Christianshavn is around twenty minutes from ITU by metro on the M1 line, changing at or travelling through the city centre stations. By bike the same journey takes approximately twenty to twenty five minutes along the flat cycle routes crossing Amager Bridge.

What's the average rent near ITU?+

A room in a shared flat in the Amager area typically costs between €600 and €900 per month excluding utilities. Purpose built student rooms in the wider city run from roughly €550. When should ITU students start looking for housing?+

For an August or September start, begin searching in June at the latest, and ideally in May. For a February semester start, begin in November. The weeks immediately after ITU sends out admission letters see a surge in demand, so moving quickly after you receive your offer letter is advisable.
